Description Hide Show Siren Charms arrived in September 2014 as the most polarising In Flames record since their early 2000s pivot, and that friction is exactly what makes it so interesting to revisit. Cut at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the same complex tied to Bowies Heroes and U2s Achtung Baby, it leans into space, atmosphere and melody in ways that unsettled long-time fans who came up on Whoracle and Clayman. Yet you can hear the band chasing a different sort of intensity, less about blast and more about mood, and the old Hansa reverb seems to seep into the corners of these songs. In Plain View opens with a measured stomp rather than a sprint, Bjrn Gelotte and Niclas Engelin trading clean-lined hooks for serrated riffs. Anders Fridn goes heavy on clean phrasing, saving screams for contrast, which fits the albums pull between allure and danger. Rusted Nail, the lead single, is all about that tug, a chorus designed for festival fists but wrapped in a darker, almost industrial sheen. Through Oblivion dials back the bite further, Anders almost crooning over a patient beat while the guitars glide and shimmer. It is not the Gothenburg gallop of old, it is a band in its mid-30s seeing what else their songwriting can do. The Hansa choice mattered. You can hear the room in the toms, the air around the cymbals, Daniel Svensson laying down grooves that feel human rather than grid-snapped. Peter Iwers bass is thicker in the mix than on some earlier records, anchoring the choruses so they bloom instead of explode. That sense of physical space makes a track like Paralyzed land harder than its tempo suggests. It is a straight-ahead rocker, but the push and pull of the rhythm section keeps it from flattening into radio gloss. There is also a rare duet for the band in When the World Explodes, which features Swedish singer Emilia Feldt. Her lines lift the bridge into something stark and cinematic before Anders tears back in. It is a small risk in a set full of them, and it pays off. The title track, Siren Charms, threads the albums theme most clearly, seduction as both saviour and threat, with a chorus that sticks in your head for days. Reception at the time ran hot and cold. Some metal press praised the hooks and the willingness to move past formula, others bristled at the polish and the ratio of clean vocals to screams. That split has settled a bit with distance. Heard alongside Sounds of a Playground Fading and what came after, Siren Charms feels like a purposeful bridge, a document of a band trying to keep evolving rather than shrinking into a legacy act. They were signed to Epic Records for this run, and the production values match that scale, but there is grit here too, especially in the guitar textures and the way choruses often arrive slightly sideways rather than as blunt force.
