Madonnas American Life, cut across 2LP at 45RPM, is her most bracing Mirwais collaboration, folding folk guitars into hard, minimal electro. On the title track, spitfire verses and a sardonic hook bite harder here, while Hollywood glides colder and cleaner. Nothing Fails blooms more gracefully, the choir arriving with real headroom. Spreading it to 45RPM gives more space around those clipped guitars, and transients snap cleaner. Packaging keeps the stark, militarised aesthetic intact; the photography suits the musics austerity. File it next to early-2000s electro-pop; fans of Goldfrapps Black Cherry will get the mood, but Madonnas mix of acoustic strum and political bite makes it its own thing.
