Privateering, his first double set, was cut at British Grove with the long-serving band, and it plays like a calm, lived-in travelogue. Redbud Tree slips in on hushed fingerpicking before the melody blooms, while Corned Beef City swings with pub-blues swagger and a sly guitar break that grins then gets out of the way. This 2LP pressing does the material a favour. The arrangements finally get the space they ask for, and the low end sits deeper without smudging the voices. Stereo imaging feels more three-dimensional on the quieter pieces.
