Warp put out (Ch-vox) (REDUX) on 14 May 2021, expanding the 1996 Rephlex release that arrived when the band were shedding their early shoegaze glow for something colder, stranger and more interior. It sits between scenes and timelines, touched by dub, ambient techno and post-rock but faithful to none of them, which is part of why it still sounds so singular. Context helps. After the gauzy pulse of Quique and the cooler geometries of Succour, Seefeel decamped to Aphex Twins Rephlex for Ch-vox. That move made sense. The fingerprints of that world are here, not in overt breaks or obvious acid squiggles, but in a taste for negative space and a fascination with treated sound. Mark Cliffords guitar becomes a grainy oscillator, Sarah Peacocks voice melts into the mix as a distant vapour trail, and rhythm is suggested rather than declared. It is music that trusts subtraction. The Redux edition keeps the stark, nocturnal core intact while opening a window onto the period that birthed it.
