Description Hide Show The Orielles have always had a knack for smuggling curiosity into pop songs, but Tableau feels like the moment that curiosity takes the wheel. The Halifax trios third album arrived in October 2022 on Heavenly Recordings, a long, shape-shifting work that pulls you out of the indie disco and into something more exploratory. Its sprawling, often gorgeous, and surprisingly cohesive for a double set that leans into improv, electronics and unhurried grooves. No surprise it earned some of their best notices yet from UK press, who clocked how confidently the band step beyond their jangly beginnings. What strikes first is how physical the record feels. You can hear the room in the drums, the air around the piano, the way the bass warms everything from underneath. Instead of racing from hook to hook, the songs open out, settle into patterns, and invite you to notice the details. Guitars glide rather than chime, keys bubble and blur, and the rhythm section takes up residence in a lovely pocket where postpunk, krautrock and leftfield dance music cross paths. If Disco Volador was about liftoff, Tableau plants both feet and lets the ground move. The band talked in interviews around this time about embracing improvisation, and it shows. Passages feel captured in the moment, then carefully edited so the sparks still fly. When a beat stutters and reforms, it sounds like a fragment of a late night jam that no one wanted to end. You can trace lines to Stereolab, Broadcast, even Talk Talks late period, but the blend is very much their own. Esm Dee HandHalfords bass is a quiet star throughout, steadying the ship while Henry Carlyle Wades guitar colours the margins and Sidonie B HandHalfords drumming threads muscle and delicacy. Theres a sense of renewed independence here too. Following their film project La Vita Olistica, the band seemed hungry to rethink how they make records, folding in field recordings, offkilter percussion and long instrumental passages without losing their ear for a hook. Tableau sounds like it was made by people who spent a lot of time listening together, playing together, and then sculpting the results until the joins disappeared. The sequencing helps, with little bridges and lingering codas that make the whole thing feel like one big canvas rather than a list of tracks. If youre cratedigging for something that rewards time, the Tableau vinyl is the way in. Spread over two LPs on Heavenly, it gives the music room to breathe, and the lowend presence is tailormade for a good needle drop.
